Odysseus demanding the child Astyanax from Andromache,
oil on canvas, 153.5 x 175.5 cm, unframed

When Hector took his farewell from his wife Andromache and his small son before the battle with the Greeks, the child was scared of his father in his armour, until he took off his mighty helmet. He picked up his son and voiced his hope that his son would become a great warrior in his stead (Homer, Iliad 6.371ff, etc.). This painting shows Andromache kneeling in the centre of the picture. To her left stands Odysseus with his warriors, his right hand raised imperiously.
