Description:
this important altarpiece by pereda was formerly in the royal collection of queen isabella ii of spain (1830-1904). the composition exists in another autograph version, of similar dimensions (223 by 143 cm.), in the musée des beaux-arts, lyon (reproduced in d. angulo iñiguez and a.e. pérez sánchez, historia de la pintura española: pintura madrileña del segundo tercio del siglo xvii, madrid 1983, p. 181, no. 41, plate 147). the lyon picture has been tentatively identified with the altarpiece sent from spain to cardinal crescenzi in italy, which was later in turin and subsequently bequeathed to the musée des beaux-arts in lyon by the napoleonic government in 1811. angulo iñiguez and pérez sánchez suggest a dating for the lyon picture of circa 1634, relatively early within the artist's working career, and it is likely that the present version was painted at a similar time. the strong demand for full-scale altarpieces by pereda, particularly early on in his career, is attested to by the existence of three variants of the present composition: one, signed and dated 1636, now in the museo casa de colón, las palmas de gran canaria, on deposit from the museo del prado, madrid; another, signed and dated 1637, in alcalá de henares, the philippines; and a third sold in these rooms, 8 december 1993, lot 70. provenance:queen isabella ii of spain (1830-1904); by descent to her daughter the infanta doña maria de la paz de borbón (1862-1946); thence by descent to the present owner. exhibited:galerie heinemann, munich, no. 56, as zurbaran (according to a label on the reverse).
