The relined canvas in generally fair to good overall condition, with the outer edges of the canvas having strips of restoration. There is additional scattered retouch and restoration to parts of the canvas, including in parts of sky and foreground, and very selective, fine, minor retouch to parts (but not to most) of animals and figures. There is some visible fine crazing. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Under UV scattered retouchings and a large old repaired tear, mended and retouched. Numerous retouchings to the landscape. Slightly discoloured and uneven varnish. Frame in good condition..

Lot Notes
This landscape was painted after de Loutherbourg's return fromSwitzerland in 1788. In 1962, the picture was sold as depicting theRiver Arveron in the Chamonix Valley, and this is possible. The picture will be included in the forthcoming Catalogue Raisonnéof the works of de Loutherbourg being prepared by Dr. OlivierLefeuvre, and we are grateful to Dr. Lefeuvre for his help withpreparing this catalogue entry.
