oil on canvas
24 3/8 x 19 in. (61.9 x 48.3 cm.)
Lot Notes
De la Motte was active in Tournai, where he entered the Guild ofSaint Luke in 1653. In 1670, he worked on the decoration of thetriumphal arches commemorating Louis XIV's second entry into thecity. His remaining oeuvre of about a dozen pictures includestrompe-l'oeil still lifes often with, among other things, prints orletters attached to a wooden partition (see M. Faré, Le GrandSiècle de la Nature Morte en France: Le XVIIIème siècle, Fribourgand Paris, 1974, pp. 162-7).
The artist had a preference for the landscapes of the Pérellefamily, which he often appropriated for his compositions. The redchalk drawing is a quotation, in reverse, of Michelangelo's redchalk Study for the head of the Doni Madonna from 1503-04(Florence, Casa Buonarroti). De la Motte also copied, with somedifferences, a trompe-l'oeil by the Dutch painter CornelisNorbertus Gijsbrechts (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Dijon and StatensMuseum for Kunst, Copenhagen; see P. Mauriès, Le Trompe-l'oeil del'Antiquité au XXème siècle, Paris and Turin, 1996, pp. 160-1,figs. 130 and 132).
A trompe-l'oeil, most likely by de la Motte, was sold atChristie's, New York, 3 October 2001, lot 62, as 'North ItalianSchool, 18th Century'.

Lot Notes
De le Motte was active in Tournai, where he entered into the Guild of Saint Luke in 1653. In 1670, he participated in the decoration of the triumphal arches for Louis XIV's second entry into the city. His remaining oeuvre of about a dozen pictures represent trompe-l'oeil still lifes usually with, as here, objects, prints or letters attached to a wooden partition. The compositional device of a shelf jutting out near the top of the picture is also used by the artist in a picture in a private collection, France (M. Faré, Le Grand Siècle de la Nature Morte en France, Fribourg/Paris, 1974, p. 165, illustated). In the same picture can be found an almost identical small silver-mounted glass bottle or phial hanging from a nail to that in the present picture.
