This subject could allude to an episode from a poem by Catulle "Deuil du moineau de Lesbie" which at that time was extremly popular in Leyden, in the artist's circle around Jacques de Gheyn. It could also be an allegory of the victims of religious conflicts after 1619. The present painting is a late work in de Gheyn's oeuvre.
