Description: De Scott Evans (American, 1847-1898) A New Variety, Try One/A Trompe l'Oeil Still Life with Almonds Signed with the pseudonym "S.S. David" l.r., inscribed "A New Variety/Try One" within the composition u.l. Oil on canvas, 12 x 10 in. (30.5 x 25.0 cm), unframed. Condition: Minor retouch, stable craquelure. N.B. Although the work is technically unframed, the artist has painted the edges of the canvas that wrap around the stretcher to create the illusion of a thick wood board. The work is accompanied by a conservation treatment report dated December, 2004

Lot# 164 De Scott Evans (1847-1898 Cleveland, OH) ''Sealing Her Fate'', woman sitting at a desk writing a letter, oil on panel, 20'' H x 16'' W, signed and faintly dated lower right: De Scott Evans / 1895, signed and dated again and titled verso. Provenance: The Goldfield Collection, Los Angeles, CA. Condition: Visual: Generally good condition. Small splits in the wood scattered along the lower edge. A 1.5'' split in the wood upper left. Minor frame abrasion along the four edges. A small area of oxidation along the lower right edge. Blacklight: Touch-up throughout the woman's face, arms and dress and in the background. Difficult to read under heavy varnish.
