As early as 1533 there was a house on the site of Fonthill, when Sir John Mervyn purchased the estate which a hundred years later passed to Lord Cottington , (1579 - 1652), Chancellor of the Exchequer. Alderman William Beckford, Lord Mayor of London bought the house in 1745, but within ten years the house had burned down. Alderman set about building a neo - Palladian mansion which he completed in 1768, two years before his death. The architect of the house is unknown; Farington commented in his diary 7 November 1797, that this house was 'finished if not designed by Adam' but the most likely candidates for the honour are Henry Flitcroft, who designed the Temples in the garden at Stourhead, or James Paine. Alderman's notorious only son William Beckford (1760-1844), author of the oriental tale Vathek (published, 1786) inherited the house in 1770. The present pair of drawings relate to this inherited house where William employed the architect, Sir John Soane in 1789 to insert a gallery in the house. However, William's attentions soon turned to another project; the construction of his Gothic Abbey on the hill above Fonthill Splendens. Fonthill Splendens was demolished between 1801-1806 in order to provide building materials for the new Abbey. Although the pavilion at the end of the west wing remained and appears in Colt Hoare's History of Modern Wiltshire, IV, 1829, pl. 6. William's extravagant abbey with its high tower reaching nearly 300 feet was a short lived fantasy, it collapsed in 1825.
