Apparently part of a series executed in 1706. Another drawing, dated the same year and numbered '3', showing A Sculptress in aWorkshop, was sold in these Rooms, 19 April 1988, lot 140. Otherrelated drawings are known, including a composition very close tothe present drawing, though with different statues represented inthe background and without signature and date, which appeared mostrecently at Christie's, Amsterdam, 15 November 1993, lot 115. Thepresent drawing, and the Sculptress, seem to have been executed asfinished works in their own right, rather than as studies forprints. The studio in the present drawing includes replicas offamous statues such as The Wrestlers (Florence, Uffizi) and Pan andDaphnis (from the Farnese Collection; Naples, MuseoArcheologico).

Lot Notes
As Charles Dumas has kindly pointed out, the crowned eagles withspread wings indicate that the cradle depicted was intended for amember of the Hohenzollern family. Refering to the date 1707 Dumaspoints out that the present drawing could be a design for a cradlecommissioned by the City of Turnhout as a present to FriedrichWilhelm I von Preussen (1688-1740) and his wife Sophie Dorothea(1687-1757), who married in 1706. Their children Wilhelmine andFriedrich II were born in 1709 and 1712 respectively, and thereforethe cradle could have been intended for a child expected in 1707that never lived, or the design was not accepted. The City ofTurnhout commissioned De Cock to design a frame for a portrait ofKing Friedrich I and a carved coat of arms of the same in or around1712, still in Turnhout now. Turnhout was connected to theHohenzollern family through Friedrich Wilhelm I of Preussen's titleof Baron of Turnhout.
