Description:
Choiseul-Gouffier (Marie Gabriel Auguste Florent, Comte de) Voyage pittoresque de la Grece , 2 vol. in 3, first edition , third issue of vol. 1, engraved portrait frontispiece, 3 engraved titles, 2 folding maps, 285 engraved plates and maps on 167 sheets (of which some double-page or folding), table, extra-illustrated with an original water-colour showing two Greek peasants in traditional national dress walking across a mountain in the dawn (tipped in vol. 3, opposite p. 431), bound without half-titles, pp. 449-56 a little dusty and with repairs to lower margins, no loss, mid-19th-century French half green morocco, spines gilt, minor rubbing, folio, [Blackmer 342; Atabey 241], Paris, J. J. Blaise, 1782-1822 ⁂An exceptionally fresh and bright example, with sharp images to the plates, and no signs of foxing. This work established the model for later "Voyages pittoresques" not only in format but also by the employment of different artists. Notable artists used in this work include Saint-Aubin and Moreau le Jeune. Volume 1 contains a discourse on Greek history and the struggle for liberty. Primarily, though, it is an account of the author's travels through Greece and is heavily illustrated with maps, views of natural wonders and classical ruins.
