Description:
Lot 34 ALFRED FONTVILLE DE BREANSKI, JR (british 1877-1955) "THE GARDEN POND" Signed 'A de Breanksi Jr' bottom right; also signed, inscribed with title and dated 'XI' verso, oil on canvas 24 x 16 in. (61 x 40.6cm) and "THE ROSE PERGOLA" Signed 'A de Breanski Jr' bottom left; also signed and inscribed with title verso 24 x 16 in. (61 x 40.6cm) (2) provenance: Private Collection, Pennsylvania. Estimate $2,000-3,000 Both are unlined and have generally unobtrusive uneven cockling to parts of canvases 1. The Garden Pond: there is an approx. 2 inch long horizontal surface scratch that under u.v. light may or may not be retouched. There are some minor, scattered surface losses/slight abrasions. There are some spotty highlights, including to parts of flora at bottom and mostly to tree at upper right quadrant. We believe this spotty highlights that appear dark under u.v. light are pigment that is fluorescing, rather than restoration 2. The companion to the above…some surface losses at upper center left and to part of tree. Much of the sky appears to be restored, or at least appears dubious relative to its originality. There is an approx. 1 1/4 x 3/8 inch semi-circular area that fluoresces under u.v. light at center right edge of canvas - we believe this is likely a varnish inconsistency, not restoration. As with the other painting in this lot, we believe the spotty areas that appear dark under u.v. light are a result of pigments used, not restoration. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid.
