Born in Sunderland, Durham, Septimus Dawson wasa painter of genre scenes, specialising in depictions of rustictypes. Little is known of his career yet the present work wouldsuggest that he visited Ireland. The scene takes place inside apublic house with advertisements for Dunville’s Irish Whiskey andGuinness Extra Stout on the rear wall. A simple tin lamp hangs froma nail, and a black and white print of a dancing Irishman, shillelagh held aloft, is likewise pinned to the wall. Otherobjects of interest include a rectangular spittoon or ashtray onthe floor, a variety of blue and white delft and stoneware jugs, and a leg of cured meat and a white sack, possibly of grain orflour, hanging from the rafters. The slightly simian features ofthe gamblers and the general air of drunkenness were typical of themanner in which the Irish were portrayed in the English pressduring the nineteenth century.
