sir david murray was born in glasgow in 1849. he studied at the glasgow school of art and became a successful painter in watercolour and oil of landscapes and marine scenes. up to 1886 he painted in scotland, but after that he found his subjects mostly in the south of england and the continent. he exhibited over a period of eighty three years at the royal academy, the royal scottish academy and elsewhere. he died in 1933.
thomas raffles davison was an architect and painter. he was educated at shrewsbury, but spent his adult life in woldingham in surrey. he exhibited at the royal academy from 1877 and in new york. he was the editor of the british architect from 1878 to 1916 and published raffles davison - his life and works in 1927. leverhulme commissioned a large corpus of work for davison including views of various estates and in particular studies of different aspects of port sunlight and the daily life in this model village.
