One of Long Island's more notable painters, Davis exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Association. A friend and confidant of William Sidney Mount, he was well regarded in Mount's dianry. His early work closely emulates Mount's distinctive style. Davis' marine Works are exceeding rare and only one other version of this subject is recorded. Related work: Long Island Landscape Painting 1820-1920, Ronald G. Pisano, New York Graphic Society 1985, ill., p. 22.
