Description:
WARREN B. DAVIS (American, 1865-1928) Mrs. Emma Fenton Voorhees, 1888 Oil on canvas 36 x 24 inches (91.4 x 61.0 cm) Signed lower left: Warren B. Davis FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST PROVENANCE: Christie's East, New York, November 28, 1995, lot 107; Debra Force Fine Art, New York. EXHIBITED: Nassau County Museum of Art, Roslyn, New York, "Art and Fashion," May 28-August 13, 2006. The present work, with its sophisticated color harmonies, is a rare commissioned portrait by Warren B. Davis, of the socially-prominent Emma Fenton, a Daughter of the American Revolution, whom the artist painted when he was only 23. Doubtless her debutante portrait, Emma Fenton emerges from Davis's canvas as a distinct personality, despite all the attention lavished upon her beautiful gown and other decorative trappings.
