George Horace Davis "Guardian of the Convoy" signed and dated 1942 oil on board 12 x 12cms Fixed to a Havana wooden cigar box, signed by Winston S Churchill and dated 1942, box width 18cms. Footnote: The box is one of a small extant group, mostly painted by Davis and all signed by Churchill. It seems that some such boxes were given by Churchill whilst others were sent to Christie's for auction, the proceeds being offered in aid of the Red Cross.

'BUT FOR THIS STAND AGAINST FEARFUL ODDS, WASHINGTON WOULDHAVE FALLEN" (CIVIL WAR--VERMONT.) Papers of CaptainGeorge E. Davis, Medal of Honor recipient and hero of Monocacy. Approximately 300 items (0.7 linear feet), most manuscript, someclippings, photographs, and printed matter, almost all relating toDavis's Civil War service; condition generally excellent. Vp,1850-1908 Estimate $1,000-1,500 George Evans Davis (1839-1926) of the 10th Vermont Infantry was oneof his state's great Civil War heroes. At the Battle of Monocacy inJuly 1864, a large Confederate force was marching on a virtuallyundefended Washington. Davis was a lieutenant in charge of a 75-mancompany which held off a vastly superior force for just long enoughto cover the Union retreat, being the last unit to leave the field.After the war, Davis was an unofficial regimental historian who didextensive research on Monocacy and other aspects of the war. Heeventually resigned from the Military Order of the Loyal Legion,citing a conflict between these "secret societies" and hisChristian principles. Highlights include: a letter from Gen. James B. Ricketts, 17 May1873 on the importance of Monocacy: 'But for this obstinate standagainst fearful odds, Washington would have fallen and the wholecharacter of the war changed' * 3 post-war letters from fellowMedal of Honor winner Alexander Scott, the last dated 1 October1897 and thanking Davis for helping him get the medal, 'the onlydecoration that this government confers upon her citizens' * Aninsurance policy made out to CSA General Joseph R. Anderson of theTredegar Iron Works in 1856, and salvaged by Davis in May 1865after the works had been abandoned * A packet of 20 newspaperclippings about Monocacy * Early Davis family photographs,including an otherwise unknown post-war image of Davis (seeillustration) * A tattered portion of the regimental flag.
