Lot# 1107 Patrick Henry Davenport (1803-1890 Danville, KY) Portrait of former Illinois Governor John Reynolds, oil on canvas, 28'' H x 22'' W, est: $800/1200 signed and dated verso: P.H. Davenport 1860. Provenance: Private Collection, Pasadena, CA. Condition: Visual: A ''Y'' shaped area of paint loss between the gentleman's eyes. Scratches with paint loss upper right, the lower left edge and in the gentleman's hair. Craquelure throughout. Stretcher bar creases all four sides. Frame abrasion along the upper edge. Surface scratches with minor paint loss throughout. Surface grime and dirt throughout. Loose rippling canvas. Blacklight: No apparent restoration under blacklight. Possibly by Patrick Henry Davenport (1803-1890) A Pair of Portraits of a Gentleman and Lady oil on canvas 29 1/8 x 23 ¼ in. (sight the gentleman); 29 ¼ x 23 ½ in. (sight the lady) This pair of portraits has descended in the Taylor family of Kentucky and in the early 20th century was owned by Adele (Taylor) Barnes (1899-1985) whose grandfather, James Zachary Taylor (1829-1880) was the first cousin of President Zachary Taylor (1784-1850). According to family tradition, the portrait of the gentleman is believed to depict a member of the Bell family. Genealogical research indicates that the sitters may be Zachariah Bell (1791-1844) of Montgomery and Shelbyville, Kentucky and his wife Susanna Swearingen (1799-1861), Adele's great grandparents. Provenance Possible line of descent: Emily E. (Bell) Taylor (b. 1836), Shelby, Kentucky, daughter of Zachariah and Susanna (Swearingen) Bell, the proposed sitters George Henry Taylor (1861-1915), Bennettsville and Hopkinville, Kentucky, son Adele (Taylor) Barnes (1899-1985), daughter Thence by descent in the family Saleroom Notice Please note that this lot is now attributed to Patrick Henry Davenport (1803-1890).
