Dantsig's monumental and vigourous canvases are a classicexample of the new direction that working class, muscularImpressionism was taking in the 1960s, adopting the simplificationof form typical of the Severe Style of the period and reproducingit on a large scale. As Alexander Sidorov notes, in the 1960s,'even the subjects of his lyrical canvases, such as the girlhanging out her washing in a Sunny Day (1965, PrivateCollection) acquired an outsize portentousness' (quoted inSoviet Socialist Realist Painting, 1930s-1960s, Oxford,1992). Dantsig's partisan subjects from the 1960s are his bestknown works, and the subject of The Bulldozer Driver is asuperb representation of the 'man of purpose' that typified theera, or as the writer Leonid Leonov called this figure, the 'peakof humanity from whose height the future can be seen'. If thefigure of the present work is an emblem of the total Soviet man, accessible to the masses yet emphatic, the subject is testament tothe power of construction and socio-economic change and aninteresting counterpart to Pimenov's construction-sitecanvases. The Bulldozer Driver also reflects the new freedoms thathad resulted from the Thaw of the 1950s, both in terms of subjectmatter and style. Not only did Working Class Impressionism from theperiod softly reject the message of the more overtly politicalpropaganda and military manifestations of Soviet art, but we alsosee corresponding experimentation in plein-air painting. 'Here wefind a new vigour in paint handling, thick creamy pigmentation, with twilight as well as sunlight... the 'broad mark' of gesture, rather than carefully applied minutiae exemplified their largecanvases' (V.Swanson, Soviet Impressionist Painting, 2001).
