Description:
Andries Daniels
(Antwerp c. 1580-after 1602), The Assumption of the Virgin enclosed by a wreath of flowers, signed at lower left: A. Daniels/fe., oil on canvas, 40 x 32 cm, framed,

Certificate: Dr. Klaus Ertz (November 2010). Dr. Ertz writes: "In the painting to be assessed, an idea introduced by Jan Brueghel the Elder is carried to a final glow. The wreaths spring from the delight taken in the flowers, in their shapes and colours. The composition is entirely committed to the two-dimensional surface, on which the artist was to distribute beautiful ornament as harmoniously as possible. What mattered here was no longer correctness or reality. Other values counted instead: the two-dimensional picture plane, covered with a sophisticated linear fabric of form, without repetitions and correspondences in the individual blossoms, \‘vacant\’\’\’\’ spaces representing no longer a problem, the mosaic of the overall form built from individual shapes…".

his work is closer to that of Jan Brueghel I, and consists of

urns that are similar to the present painting (see M.-L. Hairs, Les
Peintre Flamands de Fleurs au XVII
