Description:
Awang Damit (b. 1956) Lot 195: Awang Damit Ahmad (b. 1956) Iraga ‘Muara Memori Duka’, 2006 Description: It was an ill North-Easterly (Iraga) wind that blew no good at the estuary, and the splinters and shards of a broken boat and utensils were remnants of an unfortunate incident. The struggle is accentuated by the more hard-edged and sharper forms compared to Awang Damit Ahmad’s usual organic shapes. The estuary, presumably at Awang Damit’s Kuala Penyu hometown, is shown here as a empathetic witness to the incident. The bad memory, together with the damaged parts has been buried and forgotten, acting like a catharsis, perhaps like the way the Japanese hung up bad oracles on temple tree branches, to be rid of them. But fishermen, hardy souls with an indomitable spirit, are used to such vicissitudes, and are often the better for the experience. After all, the day’s work was done, and tomorrow is just another day. Iraga, produced between 2003 to 2011, represents a saga with fetching metaphors, of Awang Damit’s growing up and struggles in Kuala Penyu which has become a stoic lesson as fond memories. A relative late-starter in Art, Awang Damit Ahmad has built a reputation as an artist as well as academician since graduating with a Fine Art diploma from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1983. He followed up with a MFA at the Catholic University in Washington DC, in 1989-1990. He was in the Malaysian art delegation in the Paintings of Malaysia exhibition in Pasadena, Los Angeles, in 1989. After winning 2nd Prize in the Malaysian Bank Association art competition in 1988, he landed the hugely coveted Salon Malaysia Major Award in 1991 with his work, Nyanyian Petani Gunung (now in Petronas Collection). 125 x 110cm

Description:
Description: Without doubt, one of the oddest Essence Of Culture (EOC) works, sans the dreary dark hues of the 1980s (from 1985), with an understated beauty even, and with a much more structured veneer, this one stands out. It is as if a swathe of divine light, couched in silver and gold, has given Awang Damit Ahmad\’s encrusted skein a precious quality. What inspires this ecstasy, to stray from his usual duller palette of red, blue, yellow, brown and black? What makes this piece more precious: there is a scarecrow in this EOC. An extremely rare and good work. It shows that scarecrow subject / concept has been creeping in Awang Damit\’s mind subconsciously, until he releases it freely in his latest Garis Mega series. His EOC tells about Man\’s struggles against, and affinity for, Nature, and the imperative of striking a balance, and in doing so, experiencing a new spiritual understanding about life. The EOC alludes to the plants, fishes, implements and the fertile black soil of Kuala Penyu, an impoverished community of farmers and fishermen where Awang Damit hailed from. Clearly, more sophisticated, it stems from the new knowledge and exposures gained from his Masters studies at the Catholic University in Washington DC in 1990.After studying at the Mara Institute of Technology, Awang Damit followed up with his Masters at the Catholic University, Washington, USA, in 1990. He won the Minor Award in the Young Contemporary Artists competition in 1984. In 1988, he was selected among the Malaysian art icons for the Contemporary Paintings Of Malaysia exhibition at the Asia-Pacific Museum in Pasadena, Los Angeles. He won the Major Award (Painting) with his work, Nyanyian Petani Gunung, in the Salon Malaysia 1991-92, and also clinched the Consolation Prize in the same category. He also won the Gold Awards in the Ecorea Jeonbuk Biennale and the Olympic Fine Art in London (both in 2012). He has been a fulltime artist since he retired from teaching in May 2011. He was awarded the Mc Millan Woods Global Awards in March 2017, and given a Tribute Showcase in Art Expo Malaysia Plus (2017) by the organiser.

AWANG DAMIT AHMAD (b. 1956) Marista Sisa Semusim II, 1996, Mixed media on canvas

\‘Marista\’\’\’\’\’\’\’\’ is Bruneian Malay meaning \‘Lost Memories\’\’\’\’\’\’\’\’ or \‘Talking About the Past\’\’\’\’\’\’\’\’ and like his starting Essence of Culture (Intipati Budaya, 1985-96), the series is a continuation of his expressions about people and land in his obscure farmer-fisherman hometown community in Kuala Penyu in Sabah. The Marista series gained prominence in the Alun-Alun Ke Marista exhibition, featuring 70 oil paintings between 1996 to 2002, at the National Art Gallery. Alun-Alun means \‘a small winding path.\’\’\’\’\’\’\’\’ADA\’\’\’\’\’\’\’\’s gaining popularity and focus can be gleaned from the succinct observation of Associate Professor Dr Muliyadi Mahamood, of UiTM: \“He (ADA) sees, hears, touches, feels, and smells his subject and the world around him. He incorporates all these sensory perceptions into his paintings.A relative late-starter in Art, ADA wasted no time in equipping himself as artist and teacher when he quit his job as a Telekom Malaysia technician in 1975, to study Art at the Mara Institute of Technology University (UiTM(, topping the class in 1983. After following the artists\’\’\’\’\’\’\’\’ delegation to the Malaysian Art at the Asia-Pacific Museum in Pasadena, Los Angeles, in 1989-90, he studied for the Master\’\’\’\’\’\’\’\’s at the Catholic University in Washington D.C., after which he keeps honing his expressionist ideals on canvas while teaching at UiTM. In 1988, he won 2nd Prize in the Malaysian Bank Association art competition. In 1991, Awang won his biggest accolade when Nyanyian Petani Gunung (now in Petronas Collection), won the coveted prize in Salon Malaysia III, organised by the National Art Gallery.

Titled
Kemarau Ini
(This Drought), this piece by abstract painter Awang Damit Ahmad is derived from his recent series
Payarama
, which the artist describes as drawing a connection between creating works of art and horticulture. The application of paint is simplified using dry and wet technique to emanate the dry spell and season\\’\\’\\’\\’s heat.

Awang Damit Ahmad gained national limelight when his work was selected for the travelling Malaysian Paintings exhibition in Pasadena, USA in 1988. He had shown early promise when his work won Minor Award in the Young Contemporary Artists competition in 1984. A graduate with a Diploma in Art and Design at the Mara Institute of Technology in 1979, he obtained his Masters from Catholic University, Washington, USA in 1990. He won Second Prize in the Malaysia Bank Association art competition in 1988. In 1992, a work from his iconic Essence Of Culture series titled
Farmer\\’\\’\\’\\’s Song
clinched the Painting Prize at the coveted Third Salon Malaysia. He also received Honourable Mention at the 1994 and 1995 Philip Morris Malaysia Art Awards. His most recent solo exhibition titled

was held at Segaris Art Centre, Kuala Lumpur in December 2014.
