Lot Notes

The Cistercian priory and estate of Esholt on the River Aire were granted to Henry Thompson, one of King Henry VIII's gentlemen-at-arms, in 1549. It remained with the Thompson family, retaining its monastic character, for more than a hundred years, passing in the 17th century to Sir Walter Calverley on his marriage to Frances, daughter and heiress of Henry Thompson. Their son, also Walter, who was created a baronet in 1711, pulled down most of the priory in the early 18th century and built a house between 1706 and 1710 on the plans of his father-in-law, Sir William Blackett's seat at Wallingford in Northumberland. Outwardly, the house owed nothing to the priory, but the interior showed that it had been built with the original ground floor of the priory as its foundations. In 1755, Sir Walter's son sold the house and its contents to Robert Stansfield, a Bradford grocer, in whose family it descended (through the female line) until towards the end of the last century, when it was purchased by the Bradford Corporation. Dall, who worked as a scene painter at Covent Garden from 1757, painted a number of topographical landscapes in Yorkshire in the 1760s and 1770s, fine examples of which are preserved at Harewood House.
