Dalby portrays with intricate finesse the refinement and elegance of these young gentlemen and their steeds. Dalby was first recorded working as a painter at 38 Stonegate, York. His father David Dalby (1794-1836) was a painter of Sporting subjects and it is believed his two brothers Thomas and Joshua were also. The main hunts around York at this time such as the Middleton, the York and Ainsty and the Badsworth provided an ample supply of patrons for such subjects. Whether the setting of these paintings is the Yorkshire dales and surrounding farmland or not, there is fine weather and a group of like minded acquaintances all share in the exhilarating moment of when a horse clears a fence at full speed.

Notes: All three men were members of northern hunts and enthusiastic Meltonians. Ralph Lambton, son of William Lambton (one of the first Meltonians), was a particularly celebrated hunting figure: in 1795 he took over the pack assembled by his brother, Henry Lambton and from 1809 he hunted hounds himself. Roger Longrigg commented: 'He lived at the kennels and, like Lord Darlington, practically in them' (The History of Foxhunting, 1975, p.108). Both George Lambton, 2nd Earl of Durham, and Ralph Lambton were also patrons of John Ferneley, who depicted Ralph Lambton and Billy Williamson (brother of Sir Hedworth Williamson, M.P. for Durham) with the Sedgefield Hunt in 1832 (Thirsk Hall, North Yorkshire).

Special Notice
Christie's generally offers property consigned by others for sale at public auction. From time to time, lots are offered which Christie's or an affiliate company owns in whole or part. Each lot of such property is offered subject to a reserve. This is such a lot.
Provenance
with Arthur Ackermann & Son Ltd., London. collection of John, 4th Marquess of Bute (1881-1947). By descent until 1999.
Lot Notes
John Dalby came from the Yorkshire family of painters and his work is sometimes confused with that of David Dalby, to whom he was related. Though their styles and subjects are similar it would seem that John's technique and manner was more Victorian. The first official record of John Dalby was in 1838, when he was living with Thomas Dalby in York and practicing as a painter. John specialized in painting hunting scenes that were admired for their liveliness, detail and precision. The painting was in the collection of John, 4th Marquess of Bute and descended in his family until 1999.
