David Dalby of York (1794-1836) Portrait of a chestnut horse in a stable with an initialled horse blanket G F H signed and dated 'Dalby York 1817' (lower left) oil on canvas 54 x 71cm (21 1/4 x 27 15/16in). together with a companion of a Dark Bay horse in a stable, signed Dalby York and dated 1817 (lower left) (2) Footnotes David Dalby was listed in the York Directory in 1815 as an animal painter living outside Micklegate Bar, York. He was buried in 1836 at St. Michael Le Belfrey Church, York. His work is often confused with his son John who was born around 1826. David painted more portraiture than John and had a softer and more fluid style.

'St. Patrick' was a chestnut colt foaled in 1817. Owned by Sir Edward Smith, 'St. Patrick' is best known for winning the Great St. Leger of 1820 against twenty-six other colts and fillies at Doncaster Racecourse. The present picture may be the painting mentioned by Walter Sparrow in
British Sporting Artists
(p 181) as having gone to America (before 1922).

Oil on canvas, lined heavily. indentation in upper right quadrant. center and upper stretcher bar marks visible. additionally four small minor dents in upper right quadrant. minor varnish scratches, particularly in tree at right. small scattered inpaints visible to the naked eye throughout picture plane. under UV, inpainting to address craquelure is visible as are scattered spots of inpainting throughout.
