began with Sir Thomas Gascoigne who established the country between
1764 and 1773. The Duke of Hamilton took over in that year for two
seasons. From 1804 until 1832, the Sykeses of Sledmere had
Gascoigne's old boundaries re-established. The Middleton dynasty

CATALOGUE NOTE
This pair of immaculately finished paintings captures the veryessence and excitement of a day's hunting for those in the field.Dalby portrays with intricate finesse the refinement and eleganceof these young gentlemen and their steeds.
Dalby was first recorded working as a painter at 38 Stonegate,York. His father David Dalby (1794-1836) was a painter of sportingsubjects as were his two brothers Thomas and Joshua. The main huntsaround York at this time such as the Middleton, the York and Ainstyand the Badsworth provided an ample supply of patrons for suchsubjects.
Whether the setting of these paintings is the Yorkshire dalesand surrounding farmland or not, there is fine weather and a groupof like-minded acquaintances all share in the exhilarating momentof when a horse clears a fence at full speed.
