Description:
eduardo dalbono italian, 1841-1915 il canto del mare (song of the sea) signed l.r.; dedicated all'amico ruggiero, located napoli, s. lucia, and dated 1893 on the reverse oil on canvas 32.5 by 47 cm., 13 by 18 1/2 in. dalbono, was one of the most talented painters of the so-called school of posillipo, and, with the gigantes, is considered one of the leading figures of neopolitan landscape painting. an important contribution of his to the partenopean painting tradition was the introduction of local folklore elements in his landscapes. it is these pictures - of which il canto del mar is one of the most famous - that have always been the most popular amongst collectors. song of the sea was described as follows by adrian margaux, a few months before dalbono's death: 'the placid, sunlit sea of the bay of naples is a more or less important feature in many of dalbono's pictures. in one of them, the song of the sea, he has done honour to the musical gift with which nature has endowed his compatriots. the neopolitans - especially those who live near the sea - are always very musical and poetic by nature...with the result that the occupations of their daily life, to say nothing of the fete of la madonna di piedgrotte, an occasion on which nothing but the best music relating to the highest themes will be sung'. born into a middle-class neapolitan family, dalbono studied under augusto marchetti in rome and with filippo palizzo, and became a close friend of domenico morelli. he spent a few years in paris, where he exhibited at the galerie goupil, and on his return to naples worked in his studio on monte oliveto.
