Description:
Follower of Michael Dahl (Stockholm, 1659 - 1743 London) Portrait of a lady in a grey dress and blue cloak oil on canvas 74 x 57cm (29 x 22in) Provenance: Burfield Hall, Wymondham, Norfolk Oil on canvas which has been lined. The paint layers have been softened during the lining process and there is wear and abrasion in the flesh. To the left of the sitter's head is an old paint loss. There are numerous retouchings across the surface which are reasonably well matched to the original. The varnish is even and semi-glossy. There is some wear to the gilding on the frame.

Michael Dahl (1659-1743 Swedish) In Traditional Collector Portrait of Mary Parker, wife of Daniel Dering, seated three-quarters-length, by a fountain Oil on canvas laid to canvas Unsigned 50.5" H x 40.25" W Provenance: Sold: Christie's, New York, Old Master & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings, & Watercolors, January 27, 2010, Lot 350. Acquired from the above sale by the present owner.. Condition: Visual: Fine stabilized craquelure throughout. Grime and varnish discoloration in areas of impasto. Visual areas of inpainting along left and right edges, approximately 1" to 1.5" thick. Four pinhead areas of repaired loss in brick to left of sitters head. Frame abrasion to lower right edge. The tacking edges were removed when re-lined. Blacklight: Inpainting along left and right edges. Scattered areas of concentrated touch-up, the largest a 2.5" x 6" area upper left and a 6" x 1.5" area to immediate left of the fountain. A 1.25" x 1" area of touch-up in the chest of sitter. Frame: 57.5" H x 47.5" W x 2" D

Michael Dahl (Stockholm 1659-1743 London) Portrait of the artist, bust-length, in a gown and cap oil on canvas, oval 21 7/8 x 17 in. (55.7 x 43.3 cm.) Dateable to c. 1715-20, this is the last of four known self-portraits by the Swedish-born Dahl who was the leading rival to Sir Godfrey Kneller in late Stuart and early Georgian England. The earliest surviving example is that dated 1691 in the National Portrait Gallery, London, showing the artist three-quarter-length, with a bust of the Venus de Medici, and described by the late Sir Oliver Millar as Dahl\\\’s masterpiece. Provenance Private collection, Yorkshire.
