Hans Dahl (1849-1937) - Norwegian landscape painter

Signed lower left 'Hans Dahl.'

Dimensions: 96 x 157 cm

Good condition

Provenance: Privately owned since 50 years, bought by the families grandfather at that time

The mastery of the artist becomes particularly evident in the depiction of the moving water; similar depictions of the fjord crossings sell for up to €94,000 on the international auction market
This large size painting was created by the Norwegian landscape painter Hans Dahl. Shown is a characteristic motif of the artist who focused on the naturalistic, romantic portrayal of the life of Norwegian people. His idealized images illustrate mostly light-filled fjords on which cheerful peasant girl and men in traditional costumes are sailing in boats across the choppy water. It is especially the representation of the moving water that shows the masterly skill of the artist Hans Dahl.

The painting is signed lower left left 'Hans Dahl.'. It is in good condition, showing few occasional touch ups in the sky and some minor retouching in the representation of the figures. Scattered color flaking in the upper margin with two vertical abrasions in the right image area. Otherwise overall of good impression. The image measures 96 x 157 cm, the dimensions of the decorative stuccoe frame are 117 x 176 cm.

Hans Dahl (1849-1937)

The Norwegian landscape and genre painter was trained with Hans Fredrik Gude and Wilhelm Riefenstahl at the Academy in Karlsruhe from 1873. He then studied at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf under Eduard von Gebhardt and Wilhelm Sohn. Dahl's favorite subjects were depictions of the moving water and landscapes with figures. In his late work, he focused on laughing peasant girls in the hay on a sunny fjord. Between 1888 and 1919, Dahl mostly lived in Berlin-Wilmersdorf and spent the summer at his villa in Balestrand on the shores of the Sognefjord. Kaiser Wilhelm II, who regularly went to Norway between 1889 and 1914, appreciated his works and visited him frequently. After 1919, Dahl no longer travelled to Berlin, but permanently remained in Balestrand.
