VINCENZO D'ESPOSITO (MALTESE, 1866-1946) Battleship H.M.S. 'Renown'; Torpedo Boat Destroyer 'Cygnet' and two others, a set of three All signed and inscribed 'D'Espostio 1901' (lower corners) Watercolour and gouache 7¼ x 10¾in. (18.5 x 27.5cm.); 6 x 9in. (15.5 x 23cm.) (4) Renown was a 2nd Class battleship commissioned June 1897 was nicknamed the 'battleship yacht' as she served as a Royal Yacht for a tour of India in 1902-3, and latterly as 'subsidiary yacht' for state guests. She also was used by the Prince of Wales at the Diamond Jubilee Spithead Review; Cygnet was a 30-knot destroyer built in 1899 by Thornycroft in Chiswick, broken up in 1920.

All images with some degree of dirt specking however most of this is on the glass rather than the images themselves, pair appear to be laid down onto card backing, colours still strong, larger work not thought to be laid down, all with discoloured card mounts and slim ebonised frame. All with Dublin framers labels.

The composite yawl Lethe was designed by G.L. Watson and builtin the Southampton yard of J.G. Fay & Co. in 1889. Registeredat 163 tons gross (114 net), she measured 99 feet in length with a20 foot beam and was originally owned by Mr. Sidney Watson of UpperBrook Street, London. Subsequently owned by Watson's wife who kepther for relaxation until about 1900, she then passed into theownership of Lt. Colonel Watson-Kennedy who kept her until 1910after which she disappears from record. Lethe was named for the underworld river, the waters of which weresaid to induce forgetfulness.
