oil on canvas. Canvas: 39.25"H x 29.25"W; Frame: 48.25"H x 38.5"W. Unsigned. Johann Mengels Culverhouse (Dutch-American, 1825-1895) was known for genre scenes which included candles and/or moonlight. These "candlelight paintings" were a popular theme among Dutch painters of the 17th century.

Mis: 24 by 40 in. 61 by 101.6 cm.
signed J.M. Culverhouse and dated 1873 (lower left) oil on canvas Canvas is lined. SURFACE: while surface is compressed from relining, retention of details and colors are good; areas of surface are somewhat thinned (right part of canvas)--but there is still good pigment retention at the left and in more thickly painted areas UNDER ULTRA VIOLET: there are definitely scattered strokes of inpainting throughout, but it's very difficult to see extent through old varnish
