Cox made a tour of North Wales in the mid-1830s to make drawings for William Roscoe's Wanderings and Excursions in North Wales (1836), but he does not appear to have visited Bodelwyddan or St Asaph on that occasion. He did visit St Asaph with the young Harry Johnson in July 1844. In 1846 he exhibited a large oil The Vale of Clwyd, which was painted in the vicinity (N. Neal Solly, Memoir of David Cox, 1873, pp. 189-90). In 1858, towards the end of his life, he exhibited a Vale of Clwyd near St Asaph at the Old Water-Colour Society (ibid., p. 291).
