Provenance Mr. and Mrs. Roger Holler, Maitland, Florida (sold:Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Chicago, Illinois, September 24, 2012, lot 41) Acquired by the present ownerat the above sale Catalogue Note Among the Taos Society of Artists, Eanger Irving Couse achieved the most distinguished recognition during his lifetime. Of his celebrated depictions of Native Americans, art historian Nicholas Woloshuk commented:"His in-born genius in art, his intensive study of the art of the European masterpieces which hung in museums and galleries, and his tutelage of [William-Adolphe]Bouguereau, [Tony] Robert-Fleury, and [Gabriel] Ferrier resulted with Couse's paintings ranking with those of the masters of his time. Most of his paintings were spontaneously executed with bold confident strokes of the brush. Some were almost impressionist and near perfection in color and coordination. His technique was genuinely masterful" (E. Irving Couse: 1866-1936, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1976, p. I).
