Galería de Arte Mexicano, Mexico City. Acquired from the above.
Painted in Paris at the prime of his career as a gifteddraftsman, sculptor and painter, Remanso represents the art ofPedro Coronel at its best. He is best known for luminous paintings, such as this one, that offer expansive fields of color and texturewith interlocking, semi-abstracted forms that often invoke earthand sky, in compositions that serve as analogies to states ofbeing. Remanso can be seen essentially as a seascape bathed inlight; the sun's orbit reflected in the waters that are representedas a chromatic kaleidoscope of reds, blues, greens andyellow. Born in the city of Zacatecas, Mexico in 1923, Coronel set out forParis in 1946 where he attended workshops overseen by VictorBrauner and Constantin Brancusi. This experience would shape hiswork profoundly. Throughout his lifetime he divided his time livingand working between Mexico and France. His work has been thesubject of major exhibitions in Mexico, France, Italy, Japan andBrazil. Also an avid collector, shortly before his death he donatedhis collection of Pre-Columbian, Greco-Roman, Medieval and Asianworks of art along with his archives and works to his nativeZacatecas, where a museum that bears his name now stands.
