Private collection, USA.
Original dye-transfer for one of the most celebrated album covers of all time - an icon of the vibrant London music and art scene of the sixties.
Artists Peter Blake and Jann Haworth worked with the Beatles to construct a Pop Pantheon of the band's heroes and influences for the cover of their 1967 album 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. Life-size models, busts, and cardboard cut-outs of such diverse characters as Sonny Liston, Edgar Allan Poe and Marilyn Monroe were brought together in a tight grouping, with the Beatles themselves, in their vivid satin bandsmen suits, positioned centre-stage.

The intention was to fix this temporary gathering on film. The resulting photograph, rendering in two dimensions the artists' elaborate installation, would then serve as the basis for the printed album sleeves that were to take this image to every corner of the globe.

Photographer Michael Cooper - already well-established in the fashionable London scene, the friend of musicians, artists and art dealers - was suggested for the Sgt Pepper task by dealer Robert Fraser, whose gallery represented the vanguard of Pop and other avant-garde art.
