Tam O'Shanter
oil on canvas
51.2 x 62.8cm (20 3/16 x 24 3/4in).
Tam O'Shanter is a poem written by Robert Burns in 1790 and first published in 1791. It tells the story of Tam who starts the poem sitting for too long in a public house in Ayr. He describes his wife Kate as a force to be reckoned with. He has to leave and so he mounts his mare, Meg and rides home through the Ayrshire countryside. Suddenly he is confronted with witches and warlocks and even the devil himself. He only manages to escape the witches led by the seductive Nannie because his mare Meg crosses the bridge and the phantoms and evil beings cannot cross running water. It is one of Robert Burns's most popular poems and the line 'Auld Ayr, wham ne'er a town surpasses, For honest men and bonnie lasses' is the reason Atr United FC are known as The Honest Men .
