Description:
PROPERTY FROM AN AMERICAN COLLECTION Samuel Colman BRITISH SKETCHING THE RUINS OF TINTERN ABBEY Samuel Colman signed S. Colman (lower center) oil on canvas 35 3/8 by 47 in. 89.9 by 119.4 cm Provenance Provenance James Pilgrim Sale: Christie's, London, January 30, 1874, lot 26 Bourne (acquired at the above sale) Private Collection (and sold, Sotheby's, London, November 30, 2000, lot 24, illustrated) Sale: Christie's, New York, October 29, 2003, lot 76, illustrated Hazlitt, Gooden & Fox, London Wally Findlay Galleries, New York Acquired from the above Catalogue Note The present work depicts the ruins of the twelfth century Tintern Abbey, the Gothic order of the medieval structure nearly overtaken by the unruly foliage of the Welsh countryside. A native of Bristol and exhibitor at the Bristol Institution, Samuel Colman was a Nonconformist who opposed the traditional ways of the Established Church, in particular the Catholic Church and the Church of England. Sketching the Ruins of Tintern Abbey was certainly influenced by Romanticism and notions of the sublime, demonstrating that the physical, earthly qualities of the prosperous Established Church, its wealth and strength, are fleeting and are no match for nature.

Arthur Coan, Nyack, New York to Kitty Gellhorn, Englewood, New Jersey and New York City, and by descent. The present painting was a gift from the artist to his close friend and collaborator, Arthur C. Coan. Samuel Colman's obituary in The New York Times of March 30, 1920, tells us that a book co-authored by Colman and Coan entitled "Proportional Form," was published only five days before Colman's passing. A 1912 treatise by Colman on the mathematical underpinnings of pattern in nature is still in use today. Entitled "Nature's Harmonic Unity," it was edited by Coan, who also provided the mathematical expertise. C
