The elements of the still life canclearly be linked to the interests and career of the polymath SirJonas Moore (1617-1679). Moore, who had been the surveyorresponsible for two of the greatest engineering feats of the 17thcentury, the Great Level of the Fens and the building of the Moleat Tangiers, was promoted to the position of Surveyor General ofthe Ordinance responsible for the inspection of the ordinance,ensuring it was received in good condition, was of good quality andwas well maintained, as well as being responsible for the mappingand fortifications of the realm. Moore was also greatly interestedin Astronomy, and his position of Surveyor General enabled him tobe the principal figure in the establishment of the RoyalObservatory at Greenwich, of which he was also one of the mainpatrons. The first edition of his mathematical compendium waspublished in 1674, and would seem to support a dating to later inCollier's career.
