CATALOGUE NOTE
The present model is the most ambitious and highly realized figure from Colinet's series on dancers of the world. While her costume is not specifically indicative of the Ottoman Empire, it boldly captures western fantasies of the exotic and forbidding decadence of the near east.

CLAIRE-JEANNE-ROBERT COLINET
FRENCH
19TH/20TH CENTURY
ORIENTALIST DANCER
marble
height 63 1/4 in.
160.7cm.
Colinet studied sculpture in Brussels under the tutelage of Jef Lambeaux. A member of the Salon des Artistes Francais, she frequently exhibited beginning in 1913, receiving an honorable mention the following year. In addition, she figured prominently at the Salon des Artistes Independants.
Colinet's specialty expressed itself in her masterful execution of monumental sculpture. Her subject matter consistently evoked the grace and eroticism of exotic dance, while paying meticulous attention to the dancer's accoutrements.
This sculpture is sexy. The supple carving produces a dizzying effect, as the viewer becomes entranced with the illusion of graceful balance. Particular finesse can be found in the manipulation of the dancer's nuanced hands, which respond expressively and energetically to movement. Additionally, the dancer's animated and direct gaze engages the viewer's attention, and the sculptor brilliantly captures the exuberance of dance.
