portrait of Owen Cosby Philipps, 11th Baron Kylsant of Carmarthen, signed and dated 1920. Canvas. 64" x 38".
Baron Kylsant of Carmarthen, KCMG, GCMG, KSEJ.M.P. chairman and managing director of The Royal Mail Steam Packet company, White Star and Union Castle shipping lines. High Sheriff of Pembrokeshire and M.P for Haverfordwest Pembroke and Chester. Became notorious when tried and convicted of issuing a misleading stock prospectus in 1931. Sentenced to 1 years imprisonment at Wormwoods Scrubs in a case known as "The Royal Mail Case". Legal bill for the case was believed to be £200,000 (£9m today). Known as "Napoleon of the Sea's". Stripped of his knighthood when convicted. Lived at "Plas", Llanstephan. Born 1863, died 1937.

Lot Notes
Edward Arthur Donald St.George Hamilton Chichester, 6th Marquess of Donegall is depicted here aged four with his mother Violet. He became a Lieutenant Colonel in the army cadet force and during the second world war served as a war correspondant. He continued as a jounalist after the war and became a well know gossip columnist. He died in Switzerland aged seventy two.
