Description:
Guglielmo Ciardi (Treviso 1842–1917 Venice) The Grand Canal, Venice, signed, inscribed Gugo Ciardi Venezia, inscribed on the reverse no. 146, oil on panel, 34.5 x 55 cm, framed, (GG) Provenance: Collection of Prince Victor Gagarine (1848-1912), Rome (according to the reverse and family tradition); European Private Collection. A large number of Ciardi\’s canvases are devoted to the Venetian landscape. He is indeed considered to be one of the finest Venetian view painters of the second half of the 19th century, continuing a long tradition dating back to the 17th century. In the present work the artist captures the luminous effects of the sunset. The peacefulness of this view with the warm colours for which the artist is best known reflect the modern ideas of depicting Venice in the second half of the 19th century. Description:
Guglielmo Ciardi (Italian, 1842-1917) View of the Venetian Lagoon at sunset signed 'CIARDI.' (lower left) oil on canvas 11 ¾ x 15 5/8 in. (29.9 x 39.7 cm.) A Venetian painter par excellence, Guglielmo Ciardi approached his subject in a manner that was wholly different from artists of all nationalities who painted in the city in the latter half of the 19th century. Instead of the obvious sites of La Serenissima, ever popular with patrons and rooted in a long tradition of vedute artists stretching back 150 years, Ciardi sought above all to render the light and atmosphere of the Lagoon, and the inland areas of the Veneto region. Together with Giacomo Favretto and Luigi Nono, Ciardi is credited with introducing these modern ideas to Venice and thereby renewing Venetian painting in the second half of the nineteenth century. In the present work the artist deftly captures the luminous effects of the sunset as it plays against the myriad textures of the water in the Lagoon.

(Treviso 1842–1917 Venice)Lagoon, signed Ciardi, oil on canvas, 35 x 64 cm, framed,(GG)
Provenance:Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Chicago, 14th of May 1993, lot218;private collection Italy.Catalogued and illustrated in:Volker and Erwin Silbernagl, Pittori a confronto, EditionSilbernagl, 1995, p. 35 (image upside down) and p. 47. NicoStringa, Guglielmo Ciardi, catalogo generale dei dipinti, Ed.Antiga, 2007, p. 221, no. 128.Exhibited:Daverio, Pittori a confronto, Volker und Erwin Silbernagl, 19November–23 December 1995.Guglielmo Ciardi depicted Venice many times during his career, andhis fascination with Venice, its architecture and inhabitants neverdiminished. He was one of Italy\’\’\’\’s most faithful adherents of pleinair painting. He trained at the Venice Academy under the landscapepainter Domenico Bresolin (1814-1890).During study trips around Italy he absorbed new influences: it wasin Florence with Silvestro Lega (1826-1895) and Telemaco Signorini(1835-1901), in Rome with Nino Costa (1826-1903), and in Napleswith Domenico Morelli (1823-1901) that he became enamoured withplein air painting, a style which then became central to hisart. He later returned to Venice where he remained for the rest of hislife, seeking to render the atmosphere of the lagoon. The present lot highlights his talent for capturing light withperfection. The treatment of the brushstrokes depicting the waterare modern in character. Here the lagoon draws our eye through thereflection of the light in the water. The masts with their coloredsails seem to move with the rhythm of the water. On the right-handside a mother stands with her two children. In the background liesthe city of Venice.
