A portrait of a Chinese nobleman
painted on fabric
oval, 7�in x 5�in (19.5 x 14cm) in a gilt frame.
Note: by family tradition it is thought that the painting was given as a token of gratitude to the vendor's grandfather, who was an employee of Vickers Shipbuilders in Barrow-in-Furness where he worked on the Chinese Cruiser Ship, 'The Ying-Swei'; it is believed that it was a gift from Prince Chun of the Qing Dynasty who commissioned the ship and gave pictures of himself to some of the ship workers.
