Lot 71 PHILIPPE CHARTRAND (cuban 1825-1889) LANDSCAPE WITH DEER AND HUNTER Signed 'Ph. Chartrand' bottom left, oil on panel 16 3/8 x 12 1/2 in. (41.6 x 31.8cm) provenance: Private Collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Estimate $5,000-8,000 Paint separation in foreground - also in right of river and amongst trees at left side in center, crazing in sky. Some minor losses at edge due to frame rubbing. Two pinhead sized spots of what appears to be household paint left center (visible in photo.) Very minor area fluoresces under u.v. in sky near upper edge. Painting appears to be quite dirty and generally in good to very good original condition. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Chartrand, whose family wealth derived from thesugar industry and had active business interests in the southernUnited States, was actively encouraged to paint and traveled toFrance in 1854 and again in 1864 to further his studies. While inEurope he was greatly influenced by the teachings of TheodoreRousseau and the Barbizon School of landscape painting. Upon returning to Cuba, Chartrand reinterpreted the romanticatmospheric style of the Barbizon School in the context of thetropical light and landscapes of the Caribbean. During his shortlifetime, Chartrand became a highly respected artist, exhibitingboth in Cuba and the United States, including the 1876 CentennialExhibition in Philadelphia. Esteban and his brothers, Philippe andAugusto, formed the most important dynasty of Cuban landscapepainters of the nineteenth century.
