D'origine Russe-Ukrainienne, Youla CHAPOVAL vient à Paris dès l'âge de 7 ans.
Il s'inscrit à la faculté de médecine et abandonne pour la peinture sur les conseils du sculpteur Fenosa.
Pendant l'occupation allemande, il va étudier à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Marseille puis de Toulouse et revient à Paris en 1947 où il reçoit le Second Prix de la Jeune Peinture puis le Prix Kandinsky en 1949. Sa personnalité lui valut des amitiés flatteuses et son talent le soutien des critiques influents du moment comme Roger van Gindertael, Charles Estienne et Jacques Lassaigne.
Cette même année, il expose à la Galerie Maeght avec le groupe Les mains éblouies et la Galerie Jeanne Bucher lui offre sa deuxième exposition personnelle.
En 1951, il réalise trois peintures murales pour l'Ecole Langevin à Suresnes. Après la guerre, Youla Chapoval produit une peinture issue de la figuration post-cubiste représentative de la peinture internationale du moment puis il s'adonne totalement à l'abstraction dans un style à tendance géométrique, fondé sur une étude rigoureuse de l'espace qui laisse place aux élans spontanément lyriques de l'artiste.
Of Russian-Ukranian origin, Youla CHAPOVAL came to Paris as a child at the age of seven.
He enrolled in the school of medicine, which he would later abandon for painting following the advice of the sculptor Fenosa.
During the German occupation, he went to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Marseille and then in Toulouse and returned to Paris in 1947 where he received the Second Prix de la Jeune Peinture and then the Prix Kandinsky in 1949. His personality won him many friendships and his talent earned him the support of influential critics of the time, such as Roger van Gindertael, Charles Estienne et Jacques Lassaigne.
During that same year, Chapoval exhibited at the Maeght Gallery with the group Les Mains éblouies, while the Jeanne Bucher Gallery offered him his second individual exhibition.
In 1951, he created three mural paintings for the Ecole Langevin in Suresnes. After the war, Youla Chapoval produced a painting from the period of post Cubist figuation representative of the international painting of the time. Afterwards, he committed himself completely to abstraction with a Geometric tendancy, founded on a rigorous study of space that left room for spontaneous lyrical outbursts.
