Lot Number: 298 Click on image to enlarge BORIS CHALIAPIN (RUSSIAN 1902-1979) THIS LOT IS BEING SOLD WITHOUT RESERVE Portrait of Katherine DeMille Quinn, Wife of Anthony Quinn, and Daughter of Cecil B. DeMille , 1943 graphite on paper 39 x 32.5 cm (15 3/8 x 12 3/4 in.) signed and dated lower right Boris Chaliapin 1943. Beverly Hills This drawing, in addition to exemplifying Chaliapin's extremely fine draughtsmanship, which it does, is also interesting because of the personal histories of both the artist and the sitter. A well-known portraitist and illustrator for Time magazine, Boris Chaliapin was the son of Feodor Chaliapin, the world-famous Russian opera singer. Boris received his art education in Russia and Paris. His first exhibit took place in the foyer of the London Covent Garden Theatre in 1927 during his father’’’’s international tour. In the early 1930s Chaliapin was engaged in various theater and movie productions, including the stage design of "Demon" by Anton Rubinstein. In 1935, Chaliapin emigrated to the United States and settled in New York, where he painted numerous portraits of the artistic elite. One of those "elite" whom he painted was the woman in this portrait, Mrs. Katherine DeMille Quinn (1911-1995). At the time this drawing was made, Katherine DeMille had already been married to the Hollywood actor Anthony Quinn for six years, who by 1943 was already well established in Hollywood. Anthony Quinn's career had begun to take-off in movies in 1936, where he began acting under the advice of Frank Lloyd Wright, with whom he was studying art and architecture. Katherine herself had come from a family with very-well entrenched Hollywood roots. She was the adopted daughter of the visionary American film director Cecil B. DeMille. Born Katherine Lester in Vancouver, Canada, she was the biological daughter of an Officer in the Canadian Army who died in combat during World War I, and a mother who had died of tuberculosis in 1920. At nine years of age, Katherine was found living in an orphanage and was legally adopted by Cecil B. DeMille and his wife Constance.
