CATALOGUE NOTE
This work is a study for the mural in the auditorium of Public School 150 in Queens, New York, entitled Children in Their Cultural Activities and Children in Creative Activities. The mural, in two sections flanking the stage, depicts children engaged in various pursuits such as painting, carpentry, and in this study, reading. Celentano became the first pupil of Thomas Hart Benton at the age of 12, and later assisted Benton with a number of murals. The subjects of his social realist works were primarily drawn from the streets of New York, especially from his neighborhood of Italian Harlem. In addition to his easel paintings, Celantano worked on at least four mural projects as a WPA artist. This lot is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue: Janet Marqusee Fine Arts, Daniel Celentano, New York, 1992, and a photocopy of three newspaper articles, circa 1940, discussing the approval and installation of the mural in P.S. 150.
