CATALOGUE NOTE
Giovanni Agostino Cassana was the son of the Genoese still-life painter Giovanni Francesco Cassana but worked in Venice during the second half of the 17th century, influenced by the nothern still-life painters active in that city (such as Jacob van der Kerchkoven and Jacob Victor). After about 1700 Giovanni Agostino specialised in painting animals and still lifes in farmyard settings such as this. A similar format is adopted by Cassana for a pair of paintings in a private collection in Florence, in which some of the same still-life elements also appear; for example, the guinea pigs and terracotta jug and bowl (see Bocchi, under Literature, p. 464, reproduced figs. 591 and 592; and in colour in Paliaga, under Literature, p. 402). That pair are thought to have once formed part of a series of seven paintings executed for Stefano Conti di Lucca in 1706 and a date just prior to that for the present work seems plausible.A reduced replica of this composition was published by M. Chiarini, in Natura viva in casa Medici, exhibition catalogue, New York & Miami, 1986, fig. 38.
