Bearing inscription verso: "Thomas Addis Emmett by William O'Carroll, 57 Henry St. Dublin"
T.A. Emmett, 1764-1827, Lawyer, United Irishman and brother to Robert Emmet. He went into exile in Belgium and France before going to America were he had a successful legal and political career. A friend of Thomas Payne, he wrote a biography of his brother.

Surface grime. Canvas is buckling in the upper right and upper left corners. Frame rubbing. Scattered craquelure in the woman's chest and neck. Dense varnish layer making it hard to detect restoration under UV light. Possible inpaint in the woman's forehead and hair.
