Description:
Lot Details A patinated bronze sculpture: Festival Bound / Allegorie de la danse Albert Ernst Carrier-Belleuse (French, 1824-1887) third quarter 19th century With medium brown patina, inscribed to base A. CARRIER , inscribed in ink to underside of base 5773 , and bearing engraved inscription to the back of the base L.C. TIFFANY. height 21 1/4in (54cm) Footnotes Literature Pierre Kjellberg, Les Bronzes du XIXe Siècle , Les Editions de l'Amateur, 1987, discussed p. 190 Harold Berman, Bronzes: Sculptors and Founders 1800-1930 , ABAGE, 1974, ill. no. 475, p. 102 Carrier first entered this model in marble in the Salon of 1867 and soon afterwards produced reductions in bronze. Apparently the dancing cherubs are enticing the central figure to a festival of Bacchus: an orgy of fun-loving satyrs and drunken bacchantes. "This major work from [the] fertile mind and nimble fingers of Carrier-Belleuse also reflects his sense of humor, as evidenced by smaller baby-Bacchus' expression as he momentarily becomes entangled in the bacchante's swirling garment." (Berman op. cit. , p. 103)

Description:
Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse 1824 - 1887 ODINE signed A. CARRIER bronze, light brown patina height 29 3/4 in. 75.5 cm J. Hargrove, The Life and Work of Albert Carrier-Belleuse, New York and London, 1977, pp. 47-48, pl. 10 L'Odine is the heroine of Friederich de la Motte-Fouque's fairy romance. She is a water nymph who transforms into the child of a fisherman and later marries a knight. Carrier-Belleuse's model of L'Odine was blatantly inspired by Houdon's terracotta Diana (Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. Despite the sculpture's nudity it exhibits a modesty related to his other depictions of nymphs. He exhibited L'Odine at the Salon of 1864. Hargrove explains that the iconography of a woman amongst the brushes came about as Carrier was working on the sculptural program for the facade of the Casino at Vichy, which included a relief called La Source, depicting a nymph emerging from reeds.
