CATALOGUE NOTE
RELATED LITERATURE Bruton 1979, p.30-1This model of Homage to Priapus is related to Carrier-Belleuse'sfamous 1863 marble of a Bacchante, exhibited at the Salon, boughtfor the Tuileries and now in the Musee d'Orsay. It is a primeexample of the sculptor's admiration of eighteenth century modelsby artists such as Clodion and Marin. A group entitled Offrande a Bacchus which featured in Carrier'ssales in 1874 and 1883 may be identifiable with the presentcomposition, but the same sales also included a Bacchante au terme,a description which equally fits this model.

LITERATURE AND REFERENCES
J. Hargrove, The Life and Work of Albert Carrier-Belleuse, NewYork and London, 1977, pp. 47-8, pl. 10
CATALOGUE NOTE
L'Odine is the heroine of Friederich de la Motte-Fouque's fairyromance. She is a water nymph who transforms into the child of afisherman and later marries a knight. Carrier-Belleuse's model ofL'Odine was blatently inspired by Houdon's terracotta Diana(Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg), and despite the sculpture'snudity it exhibits a modesty relative to many other of hisdepictions of nymphs. He exhibited L'Odine at the Salon of 1864.Hargrove explains that the iconography of a woman amongst therushes came about as Carrier was working on the sculpturalprogramme for the facade of the Casino at Vichy, which included arelief called La Source, depicting a nymph emerging from reeds.
