Von Dannecker began work on the life-size "Ariadne and the Panther" in 1803 and completed it in 1814 for the Frankfurt banker Simon Moritz von Bethmann. Perhaps the best known of von Dannecker's work, "Ariadne and the Panther" was exhibited for public view beginning in 1856. Carrier Belleuse made his reputation with his sculpture 'Salve Regina', shown at the 1861 Salon, and his later works 'Baccante' (1863) and 'The Messiah' (1867), which brought him medals and the Legion d'Honneur. He became highly regarded by Napoleon III who would introduce him as "Notre Clodion". He apprenticed Matherin Moreau, and notably during the 1860s and 70s he apprenticed Auguste Rodin.

LOT 513 ALBERT-ERNEST CARRIER-BELLEUSE 1824 - 1887 HOMAGE TO PRIAPUS 5,000—8,000 USD measurements height 23 7/8 in.; 60.7 cm Description France circa 1868-1871 signed A CARRIER.B. terracotta PROVENANCE Heim Gallery, London EXHIBITED Washington, New York, Cambridge 1979-1982, no. 97 (illus.); NewYork, 1981, no. 57 CATALOGUE NOTE RELATED LITERATURE Bruton 1979, p.30-1This model of Homage to Priapus is related to Carrier-Belleuse'sfamous 1863 marble of a Bacchante, exhibited at the Salon, boughtfor the Tuileries and now in the Musee d'Orsay. It is a primeexample of the sculptor's admiration of eighteenth century modelsby artists such as Clodion and Marin. A group entitled Offrande a Bacchus which featured in Carrier'ssales in 1874 and 1883 may be identifiable with the presentcomposition, but the same sales also included a Bacchante au terme,a description which equally fits this model.
