Description:
Evariste Carpentier (Belgian, 1845-1922) The little goatherd signed, inscribed and dated 'E Carpentier Paris. 80' (lower left) oil on panel 21¾ x 17 7/8 in. (55.3 x 45.5 cm.)
The son of a southern Flemish farmer, Carpentier entered the academy in Antwerp at the age of 18. Here he was taught by Nicaise de Keyser (1813-1887), an artist who had made a name for himself in 1836 as one of the leading figures of historical Romanticism, a genre then flourishing in Europe. He developed an art dominated by the use of a full palette and a bold touch.

PROVENANCE:
Charles Knox Smith, Philadelphia.
Born in Antwerp in 1845, Evariste Carpentier received his artistic training at L'Academie de l'Anvers . After leaving the academy in Antwerp, the young artist dedicated himself to history painting which formed the basis of his artistic career.
Carpentier was a truly international artist and was recognized and admired in Amsterdam, Paris, Nice, Berlin, Barcelona and even in the United States. The artist moved to La Hulpe in the Brabant and his art demonstrates his seduction by the landscape and the clear light of the Flemish countryside. Although Carpentier's art defies categorization, he was clearly influenced by the Impressionists in both his brushstroke and his adept handling of the effect of light.

Notes: In the present large canvas by Andreas Schelfhout two complicated pictorial elements are combined. The left side of the painting is taken up by an extensive sheet of ice characterised by extraordinary spatial depth and detailing. Near the distant horizon many skating figures can be seen, some of whom are resting by a koek-en-zopie near a windmill. The right side of the painting portrays a small village where diffuse sunlight plays amongst the buildings.

It is the manner in which Schelfhout is able to combine these elements that show his ingenuity and competence. For a lesser artist, this combination would almost certainly lead to a compositional imbalance, making the right side appear much heavier than the left side. Schelfhout however overcomes this by concentrating the amount of white of the snow in the right half of the painting, in the village streets and on the roofs of the houses. This generates a very light aspect in the heavy mass of the closely spaced buildings.

The beautifully worked out lighting plan and carefully placed boats and tree trunks guide the spectator's eye through the painting and keeps it occupied. However, viewing the painting as a whole, a remarkable harmony can be observed. In this way the painting can appear both lively and tranquil all at once.
