Description:
Niccolo d'Ardia Caracciolo RHA (1941-1989) Apples in a Silver Pot Oil on canvas, 29 x 24cm (11.5 x 9.5'') Signed Niccolo d'Ardia Caracciolo was born in Dublin and was the only son of Ferdinando Caracciolo, Prince of Cursi. His Mother was a Fitzgerald from The island of Waterford, now Waterford Castle. Educated in Waterpark, and The Oratory School in Berkshire, his talent was spotted by the artist Pietro Annigoni who suggested a profession as an painter. He studied art in Florence under Nera Simo, and lived there periodically returning to his Irish home in Co. Westmeath to hold exhibitions or to paint the landscape. In 1964, Caracciolo was one of the painters chosen to paint a replica of the Sistine Chapel for the scenery of the film on the life of Michelangelo, ''The Agony and The Ecstasy''. In 1978 he held an exhibition at the Lad Lane Gallery, Dublin and most of the show was centred around the study of the country side near his home in Westmeath. While living and working in Florence, he held his first one man show in 1979 at the King Street Galleries, London. He occasionally exhibited at the Royal Academy summer exhibition and the Royal Portrait Society. In 1980, he held his second Dublin exhibition at the Lad Lane Gallery which included still lifes and landscapes. The artist paid particular attention to his frames which he made and gilded himself. In the 1980's, the artist divided his time between England, Ireland, France and Italy. A new departure was an exhibition of landscapes and still lifes in 1981 at the Ashley Gallery, Palm Beach, Florida. In 1983, he was elected an associate of the RHA and held solo shows at the Solomon Gallery, Tuscaloosa Gallery and Grant Fine Art Gallery, Co. Down. In 1984 he became a member of the RHA. He continued to exhibit works in the King Street Galleries, and in 1982 exhibited at the Solomon Gallery, Dublin and at the Watercolour Society of Ireland in 1984. His last exhibition was at the Solomon Gallery in 1989, and later while returning to his base in Italy, the artist was tragically killed at the age of forty eight in a motor accident near Sienna on the 16th December 1989.
