NB
The village of St. Eloi is significant for the extensive number of underground mine detonations made near the village during World War I. Within the small confines of the area some thirty mines were set by both British and German forces. The British exploded six of these at one time (the 27th March, 1916), and with eighteen other mines to mark the start of the Battle of Messines on the 7th June, 1917. Two of the largest craters remain today, one of which is visible in this composition.
