Callow travelled extensively on the Continent during 1853 but in the early autumn he was back in England and visited Richmond in Yorkshire, followed by Manchester in order to view the Art Treasures Exhibition, ending his trip in Chester, which he described as a 'delightfully interesting city'.

In 1842 William Callow was engaged to give drawing lessons to a Miss Crewe, sister of Lord Crewe, who was staying at Madeley Manor in Staffordshire, the home of her aunt Mrs Cunliffe Offley.
